SS400 Steel material analysis (Analisa Material Baja SS400)
Some of our customers still think (wrongly) that SS400 steel material is a type of “Stainless Steel” steel material (stainless steel) because it starts with the letters SS.
(Beberapa customer kami masih ada yang beranggapan (salah kaprah) bahwa material baja SS400 adalah sejenis material baja “Stainless Steel” (baja tahan karat) karena diawali dengan huruf SS).
It is thought that SS stands for “stainless steel” as is common for stainless steel which is usually preceded by a two-dash SS code, such as: SUS SS304, SS316, etc.
(Dikiranya SS adalah kepanjangan “stainless steel” seperti lazimnya baja tahan karat yang biasanya didahului dengan kode dua hurus SS, seperti: SUS SS304, SS316, dll).
SS400 Steel is Not Stainless Steel – Baja SS400 Bukanlah Stainless Steel
We would like to share information and emphasize that SS400 steel is not a stainless steel material but a structural steel or ordinary structural steel / construction steel and not stainless steel.
(Kami ingin berbagi informasi dan mempertegas bahwa baja SS400 bukanlah material baja stainless steel tapi merupakan structural steel atau baja struktur/ baja konstruksi biasa dan bukanlah baja tahan karat).
SS here stands for “Structural Steel” aka structural steel (steel construction). So, it is different from the naming of SS304, SS316, SS410, etc.
(SS di sini merupakan kepanjangan dari “Structural Steel” alias baja struktur/ kontruksi (steel construction). Jadi, berbeda dengan penamaan pada SS304, SS316, SS410, dsb).
Because it is not a type of stainless steel and is a type of structural steel only, SS400 steel material is often also called SS400 Iron or SS400 iron plate because this steel is circulating in the market in plate form.
(Karena ia bukanlah jenis stainless steel dan merupakan jenis structural steel saja, material baja SS400 sering juga disebut Besi SS400 atau pelat besi SS400 karena baja ini beredar di pasaran dalam bentuk pelat).
In ASTM SS 304, SS 316, SS 410, etc., SS here is indeed a type of stainless steel from the ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) standard. As for stainless steel based on Industrial standards in Japan, JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) they code with the prefix SUS (Steel Use Stainless) for example SUS 304, SUS 316, SUS 410, and so on.
(Pada ASTM SS 304, SS 316, SS 410, dsb, SS di sini memang jenis baja stainless steel dari standard ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials). Adapun stainless steel berdasarkan standard Industri di Negara Jepang, JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) mereka memberi kode dengan awalan SUS (Steel Use Stainless) misalnya SUS 304, SUS 316, SUS 410, dst).
While in the case of SS 400 steel, SS here does not stand for stainless steel but stands for “structural steel”.
(Sedangkan pada Kasus Baja SS 400, SS di sini bukan kepanjangan dari stainless steel tapi kepanjangan dari “structural steel“).
JIS G3101 SS400 Chemical Specification
Material SS 400 / JIS G3101 / ASTM A36 is a common steel (mild steel) where the chemical composition is only carbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Silicon (Si), Sulfur (S) and Phosphorus (P) which is used for general purpose structural steel applications, for example for bridges, marine ship plates, oil tanks, etc. SS 400 / JIS G3101 is equivalent to DIN: St37-2, EN S235JR, ASTM: A283C and UNI: FE360B.
(Material SS 400/ JIS G3101/ASTM A36 adalah baja umum (mild steel) dimana komposisi kimianya hanya karbon (C), Manganese (Mn), Silikon (Si), Sulfur (S) dan Posfor (P) yang dipakai untuk aplikasi struktur/konstruksi umum (general purpose structural steel) misalnya untuk jembatan (bridge), pelat kapal laut, oil tank, dll. SS 400/ JIS G3101 ekivalen dengan DIN: St37-2,EN S235JR, ASTM:A283C dan UNI: FE360B).
SS 400 steel / JIS G3101 / ASTM A36, is steel with low carbon content (max 0.17%C) / Low C Steel, this material cannot be hardened / heat treatment through the quench and temper process.
(Baja SS 400/ JIS G3101/ASTM A36, baja dengan kadar karbon rendah (max 0.17 %C) / Low C Steel, material ini tidak dapat di keraskan (hardening)/ perlakuan panas (heat treatment) melalui proses quench and temper).
SS400 steel as well as ST37 steel specifications are common steel (mild steel) because they contain standard chemical elements only, unlike stainless steel types such as SS304 which has 13%Cr (chrome) and 8%Ni (Nickel).
(Baja SS400 seperti juga spesifikasi baja ST37 merupakan baja umum (mild steel) karena mengandung unsur kimia standar saja, tidak seperti jenis stainless steel misal SS304 yang memiliki 13%Cr (chrome) dan 8%Ni (Nickel).
This material can only be hardened through surface hardening such as carburizing, nitriding or carbonitriding, where the surface hardness can reach 500 Brinell (approximately 50 HRC) at a surface depth of 10 to 20 microns depending on the process parameters.
(Material ini hanya bisa dikeraskan melalui pengerasan permukaan (surface hardening) seperti karburisasi (carburizing), nitriding atau carbonitriding, dimana kekerasan permukaan bisa mencapai 500 Brinell (kira-kira 50 HRC) pada kedalaman permukaan 10 hingga 20 mikron tergantung parameter process-nya).

From the chemical composition of the elements contained in the SS 400 material does not show the characteristics of stainless steel materials that have levels of chrome (Cr) and Nickel (Ni). For type 304 / SS304 stainless steel at least has Cr-Ni levels: 18-8, ie: 18% Chrome and 8% Nickel.
(Dari komposisi kimia (chemical composition) unsur-unsur yang terdapat dalam material SS 400 tidak menunjukkan ciri khas yang dipunyai material baja tahan karat yang memiliki kadar krom (Cr) dan Nikel (Ni). Untuk baja tahan karat type 304 / SS304 minimal memiliki kadar Cr-Ni : 18-8, yakni : 18% Chrome dan 8% Nickel).

So the assumption of SS400 steel or SS400 iron is a stainless steel / stainless steel material is a fallacy because SS400 steel material is actually a construction steel / structural steel or construction steel.
(Jadi anggapan Baja SS400 atau besi SS400 merupakan material baja tahan karat / stainless steel merupakan kekeliruan karena material baja SS400 justru merupakan baja konstruksi / structural steel atau or construction steel.

Mild Steel sama dengan SS 400 ?
SS400 termasuk baja umum (mild steel)…baja-baja konstruksi dengan kadar C (karbon) rendah…(<0.3%C).

Yang kami ketahui baja dengan kode SM adalah baja konstruksi untuk keperluan struktur yang di las mengikuti standar JIS G3106 Structural Steel Plate sbb:
JIS G3106 specification is for hot rolled carbon steel plate for welded structural purposes, steel grades include: SM400A/B/C, SM490A/B/C, SM490YA/YB, SM520B/C,SM570.
Appication:
SM400A/B/C: Carbon steel shapes, plates, and bars of structural quality for use in riveted, bolted, or welded construction of bridges and buildings, and for general structural purposes.
SM490A/B/C: Hot rolled steel plate used for outside engineering, ships, military (armored) construction.
SM490YA/YB: Super heavy steel plate for welded structure of bridges, highway construction.
SM520B/C: Super heavy steel plate for welded structure, it is also low carbon high strength structural steel with good cold forming property.
SM570: Low alloy and high strength steel plate, heavy and wide plate for machinery parts, boom, crane, chassis, buildings bridges and mobile equipment.
Namun kalau kita cari akronim SM bisa jadi singkatan dari Sheet Metal (Baja Pelat).

apakah ss400 bisa dijadikan persamaan dengan 40cr untuk pondasi tower crane
SS400 adalah baja karbon rendah (C:0.17%) sementara itu baja 40Cr adalah baja kromium untuk penggunaan struktural mesin dengan kadar C:0.37-0.44 (baja karbon medium).
Tentu kekuatan tarik berbeda. Jadi SS400 dan 40Cr tidak ekuivalent.
